What Is Vulvodynia?

Vulvodynia (vul-voe-DIN-e-uh) is chronic pain or discomfort around the opening of your vagina (vulva) for which there’s no identifiable cause and which lasts at least three months. The pain, burning or irritation associated with vulvodynia can make you so uncomfortable that sitting for long periods or having sex becomes unthinkable. The condition can last for months to years (Mayo Clinic).

I’d like to share with you the benefits of journ I’d like to share with you the benefits of journaling, from a person that does not like it.

There are many benefits from it and people has found relief in chronic pain this way, as it helps channel emotions and many times chronic pain is the physical manifestation of bottled up emotions in the body. However, I do not do it often. I did it as part of my therapy and I do it when I really need it, I guess I’m lazy, but I can tell you that it offers a great way to channel things that we may not even know we feel.

The past few days have been a rollercoaster of emotions, some of them I could barely identify as I was feeling so many things at once. Today my body was hurting, it felt I had a huge rock in my stomach, pressure on my chest, and my pelvis was tensing up. I felt all that pain in my body from all the feelings I didn’t have time to process. I was crying, feeling confused and overwhelmed, and trying to soothe myself to ameliorate my emotional and physical distress. And then I started writing.

I poured my heart into paper and I made sense of my confusion through giving them a word-form. I expressed my frustration, anger, sadness, love, care, purpose… and the more I wrote, the more the pain subsided. The more I emptied myself through these letters, the lighter I felt. The heaviness that had been in my body was no longer there. I took everything haunting me, and I gave it to the paper to carry it for me. It worked. Even if I had been letting all these sensations consume me, now I felt I had a voice, and that voice made me feel strong and got me back my sanity and my well-being. 

While I always advocate for speaking up, sometimes it can be too complicated. Too many factors play a role, making it difficult or in some cases impossible. But when we write, our nervous system feels we are expressing all of that, and therefore we can cultivate peace. When we are able to assert ourselves, we release hormones that change our physiological state.

When you ask “why am I in pain” you are giving When you ask “why am I in pain” you are giving your power away, putting all the responsibility outside of your control, letting the situation run you. You limit yourself from the possibility to make changes in your life and addressing things that need to be taken care of. 
The pain is not your fault, and we cannot change what happened to us, but we can choose to change things in the present that are perpetuating that pain.
When we look at it with curiosity, many times we see that it has a message for us. It can be about the way we relate to others, about traumas that we’ve swept under the rug, or about our lifestyle. Look at it as a messenger, befriend it, so you can be the one that runs your body and your life, and not the other way around.

I’ve been there, I know this can be triggering and confusing, but at the end what I want for you is to not be a victim of this pain anymore & regain your power.

Dear beloved women, I understand your despair and Dear beloved women,
I understand your despair and the many times you have been let down. I understand the confusion, the lack of empathy you’re receiving from so many, and that you’re wondering why it had to be you. 
I understand all the fearful thoughts and insecurities that can come from being affected in such a vulnerable area. 
I understand you want to heal, but healing is not only being free from pain… it is embracing pleasure, is connection, is feeling the wholeness of your being which you may not be aware of right now.

I know healing is overwhelming, but it can be a learning journey too. A journey of growth and deeper understanding of yourself.
Use your pain in your favor, until it is ready to go. Use it as a compass to stand up for yourself, to set boundaries, to learn to love yourself deeper than you ever would if you had not presented with this challenge.
Pain is not forever, it is just here to teach you something. Listen, until it is ready to be released.

I used to think some people’s problems were bs b I used to think some people’s problems were bs because to me, what I was going through was much worse. However, I learnt that even for me that felt small, for them it was difficult. It is not up to anyone to decide how we should feel about things. Emotions are not rational. Everyone has their own struggles and there’s no need to do a trauma contest, we can just hold each other in our own difficulties instead of dismissing each other’s feelings because of our own. Kindness is better than ego. Much love,

It’s not about what happened, it’s about our s It’s not about what happened, it’s about our subjective experience. If something to you was painful or traumatic, it doesn’t matter that someone else “had it worse”. That’s not how emotions work, rationalizing is not healing. Feel, and when you’re ready, heal.

Support during difficult times is crucial, no matter what the event is but rather how you’re experiencing it - Do you have people in your life that understand this?

This only only improves your general life, it actually tells the cells in your body that they are in a safe space to heal. On the other hand, when we allow things and people into our life that don’t fully support our needs, our nervous systems are in higher alert, which makes healing much more difficult. It won’t make it disappear automatically, but ev It won’t make it disappear automatically, but every time you choose to honor your needs and put yourself first, your body receives the signal that you’re taking care of it and that it doesn’t need to freak out any longer.

Do you know how spending time with people you love Do you know how spending time with people you love can help you? 👯‍♀️

There are many obvious benefits to spending time with people we care about, we have fun, we feel more relaxed, we feel more protected… but do you know that this actually contributes to your healing?
When we are with someone we feel safe with, our nervous system regulates. Our nervous systems become more attuned and calm, the “social engagement” segment of our  parasympathetic nervous system does it job, promoting an environment in the body for healing to take place.
Add in some hugs for oxytocin and you’ve got a perfect starting point to start feeling more balanced.

Sometimes that’s not available to us and that’s why we need to also have other techniques that we can use by ourselves, but by far, my favorite is being able to feel heard and held by my friends when I’m struggling. It instantly makes me feel safer and calmer, which is much harder to achieve by myself.
